Life Coaching or Counselling? Choosing a helping career

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: November 2024

Are you someone who naturally gravitates toward helping others? Do you often find yourself being the person friends or colleagues turn to for advice, support, or guidance? If you’re considering a career where you can channel that passion for helping people, you’ve likely come across two popular paths—life coaching and counselling. While both professions aim to empower others, they differ in approach, focus, and training. Let's explore these two career options to help you decide which one aligns with your passion, skills, and goals.

Embarking on a journey to choose between life coaching and counselling requires reflection and clarity about your personal and professional aspirations. Whether you envision yourself assisting individuals in overcoming past challenges or guiding them toward future aspirations, remember that both paths hold the power to profoundly impact lives.

What is the difference between life coaching and counselling?

The ability to listen empathetically and a genuine desire for your client’s success are crucial in both fields. However, life coaching and counselling serve different purposes and involve distinct approaches. It’s important to understand these differences before pursuing a career in either profession:-

Life Coaching

Life coaching is action-oriented and future-focused. Coaches partner with their clients to set meaningful goals, overcome challenges, and achieve personal or professional growth. The emphasis is on unlocking potential and guiding clients forward toward their ideal outcomes.

Life coaching may appeal to you if:

  • You're passionate about having a positive impact and helping individuals set and achieve goals.
  • You enjoy motivating and encouraging others
  • You prefer to focus on growth, possibilities, and future actions rather than exploring deep emotional or psychological concerns.

Coaching often addresses areas like setting and achieving life's aspirations and goals, career transitions, improving confidence, wellbeing, performance at work, business, leadership, parenting...the list is endless! What makes this field exciting is that it is adaptable — you can specialise in a wide spectrum of niches or sectors…that statement “There is a coach for everyone”  holds true!

Education & Training: Earning an accredited coaching qualification from a reputable coaching training organisation like The Coaching Academy, and accredited by a recognised coaching body like the International Coaching Federation (ICF) or the Association for Coaching, enhances your credibility and ability to be a successful coach. Expert and professional coaching training focuses on practical tools like effective listening and questioning, goal setting, and problem-solving strategies.  Participants will also engage in interactive exercises to enhance communication skills and develop expert coaching skills. By the end of the training, attendees should be equipped with the knowledge and techniques to apply these skills in real-world scenarios working as an employed coach or running their own coaching business.

Counselling

Counselling, on the other hand, is more therapeutic and focused on emotional healing and mental health intervention. Counsellors support individuals working through emotional issues, navigating mental health challenges, or recovering from traumatic experiences from their past. The emphasis is on understanding and healing.

Counselling may resonate with you if:

  • You want to provide deep emotional support to those facing challenges
  • You are a compassionate and patient listener
  • You’re interested in exploring how past experiences shape present behaviours.

Common areas of counselling include grief counselling, addiction therapy, marriage counselling, and mental health support.

Education & Training:  Counsellors often have a formal education and training in psychology or social work, as well as specific certifications in various therapeutic techniques. Most counselling roles, such as licensed mental health counsellors or therapists, require a degree, supervised clinical hours, and formal accreditation from a professional body such as the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). This rigorous path ensures that practitioners have the expertise needed to handle complex emotional and psychological concerns. It's important to note that addressing these types of issues should not be dealt with through coaching but require comprehensive counselling training and expertise to ensure the well-being and safety of the client.

Is life coaching right for you?

Embracing the path of life coaching means stepping into a role where you ignite change and empower individuals to unlock their potential. As a life coach, your work is deeply rewarding, allowing you to witness firsthand the transformation and growth of those you support. If you find joy in inspiring others, fostering resilience, and celebrating small victories along the way, life coaching might be your calling.

Life coaching offers the opportunity to inspire, transform, and empower individuals to live their best lives. It’s a rewarding path for those looking for flexibility and personal fulfilment while helping others achieve tangible results. Whether you’re transitioning to a full-time career or adding coaching skills to an existing profession, life coaching allows you to make a meaningful impact.

If you are already a trained counsellor, but life coaching also appeals to you, then some counsellors may also train as life coaches to add this valuable tool to their skillset, allowing them to support clients when they are ready to focus on future goals and personal growth.
