AI in Life Coaching: Navigating the New Frontier

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: February 2024

Have you considered how you could use AI as a tool within your life coaching business? Recently, Mike Garde, ChatGPT Trainer and Transformational Life Coach, joined Sharon for Coaching Conversations to discuss AI and Life Coaching. To support you as you delve into AI, Mike has written this blog to discuss the pros and cons of using AI to support your life coaching business.

The rise of AI opens a new world of possibilities for life coaches, offering access to powerful tools, many of which are free or have free versions. This democratises technology, empowering us like never before. Yet, with great power comes great responsibility, especially for life coaches aiming to excel in their niche.

Here are some examples of where you could use AI in your life coaching business: -

Using AI for Social Media:

○ Pros: Excellent way to get creative and generate ideas for posts, email, blogs etc, which can help avoid procrastination.

○ Cons: Using AI to generate all of your social media copy. It will sound inauthentic and therefore won’t engage your audience, e.g., overly generic responses or lack of a personal touch.

Using AI for research:

○ Pros: You can save an enormous amount of time by using AI intelligently to help you with your research. It’s much faster and concise than trawling through search engine results. It’s important to employ your own critical thinking in conjunction with using AI.

○ Cons: Be careful! Always fact check what comes back. AI is known to sometimes make things up if it can’t find an appropriate reference. So always check every reference returned, which may be as easy as clicking on a link.

Getting the best results:

○ Pros: AI is a tool. Learn how to use it properly by investing some time in training and experimentation. This will mean you get much better results and gives you an advantage compared to those that don’t understand how to harness its power. There are many and varied free and paid for trainings that can easily be found online.

○ Cons: If you don’t know how to use AI as a tool properly, at best you’ll get lacklustre results that look like everyone else's. You’ll also never know the potential it could bring to your life coaching business.

Create a Coaching / Training Package:

○ Pros: With the right prompt you can create a totally unique, bespoke coaching package or training for your clients, saving you hours of work, so you get to concentrate on the most important aspect of the role, which is the actual coaching.

○ Cons: To be able to create a bespoke coaching / training package, you’ve first got to be clear on what you want. Otherwise if there is any confusion in what you request, AI will more likely than not, amplify that confusion, making your package not fit for purpose.

AI as a Consultant / Mentor:

○ Pros: AI can be amazing at giving great advice in areas of expertise that you don’t have yourself. Such things as copywriting, marketing, business expertise to name but a few.

○ Cons: In creative areas like copywriting, marketing etc AI is a brilliant advisor. However, if you’re asking for legal, medical advice etc, then that’s a different matter. Where there could be severe repercussions if AI gets it wrong. Most of the larger AI's you've heard of, will advise you to get anything legal that’s been generated to be checked by a legal professional. Again if it’s medical related it may give you some information but also states you should consult with a medical professional.

In conclusion…

I’ve only touched on some of the areas which could be useful to a life coaching business. Right now, we’re in a new frontier of AI where everything is very new and we’re learning the boundaries of what is and isn’t possible or advisable. Over time as things mature, AI will become ubiquitous and we’ll use it without giving it a second thought, just like using our mobile phones.

But remember, where coaching is concerned, although AI can give you an amazing productivity boost, it’s YOU that is the most important piece of your business.   You are the one, who brings the empathy, listening & powerful questions that help transform lives, in this amazing profession I’m proud to be a part of.
