5 Ways positive psychology can elevate life coaching

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: November 2023

Based on the science of wellbeing, positive psychology offers an extra set of tools and skills which coaches can use to support their clients flourish, both emotionally and mentally. If you’re interested in finding out what is positive psychology and the impact of positive psychology on life coaching, read on as we explore five pivotal ways it can elevate your coaching sessions and foster positive change in the lives of your clients.

Positive psychology is a branch of psychology focused on the character strengths and behaviours that allow individuals to build a life of meaning and purpose. When combined with life coaching, it can help coaches to understand the science of wellbeing, offering a holistic approach to support clients with both their personal and professional goals.

What is Positive Psychology?

Positive psychology emphasises meaning and deep satisfaction, not just fleeting happiness. Martin Seligman, often regarded as the father of positive psychology, designed the PERMA model to conceptualise the main factors contributing to wellbeing.

Each letter in PERMA represents a fundamental element of a flourishing life:

P - Positive Emotion: Positive emotions such as joy, gratitude, and love not only feel good in the moment but also contribute to overall well-being. Embracing positive emotions enhances resilience and helps individuals cope effectively with life's challenges.

E - Engagement: Engaging in activities that allow for a state of flow, where one is fully absorbed and immersed in the present moment, leads to a profound sense of fulfilment. When we are engaged in our work, hobbies, or relationships, we experience a deep connection and purpose.

R - Relationships: Positive and meaningful relationships are vital for well-being. Nurturing social connections, fostering empathy, and building strong, supportive relationships with others contribute significantly to happiness. Healthy relationships provide emotional support and a sense of belonging.

M - Meaning: Having a sense of purpose and meaning in life is essential for overall happiness. This could be derived from work, relationships, personal passions, or contributing to a cause larger than oneself. Meaningful pursuits provide a sense of direction and fulfilment.

A - Accomplishment: Setting and achieving meaningful goals, both big and small, provides a sense of accomplishment. Accomplishments, whether in personal or professional realms, boost self-esteem and create a positive sense of identity. Celebrating achievements, no matter how minor, reinforces a positive self-narrative and enhances motivation for future endeavours.

The PERMA model serves as a guide, empowering individuals to proactively pursue happiness and life satisfaction.

How can positive psychology elevate your life coaching sessions?

Positive psychology provides a holistic framework, nurturing personal development, resilience, and lasting well-being. Understanding the core principles of positive psychology equips life coaches with the tools to inspire enduring positive change in their clients’ lives.

1. Building positive relationships with clients

Positive psychology serves as the cornerstone for building genuine and trusting relationships with clients. Through empathetic understanding, active listening, and unconditional positive regard, coaches create a space where clients feel valued and supported. These positive relationships become catalysts for profound self-discovery and personal growth.

2. Cultivating a growth mindset

One of the transformative aspects of positive psychology in life coaching lies in its ability to nurture a growth mindset. A growth mindset encourages clients to view failures as stepping stones toward success, fostering resilience and determination. By instilling a belief in their abilities and intelligence, coaches empower clients to face challenges with confidence, enhancing their overall personal and professional development.

3. Enhancing goal setting and achievement

Positive psychology provides a unique perspective on goal setting, emphasising the significance of intrinsic motivation and personal values. Coaches can help clients identify goals that are not only achievable but also deeply meaningful. By aligning goals with clients’ strengths and core values, coaches inspire a sense of purpose and direction.

4. Managing stress and overcoming challenges

Life’s challenges are inevitable, but with positive psychology, life coaches can equip their clients with effective stress management strategies. Mindfulness, positive reframing, and relaxation techniques are invaluable tools that help clients navigate stressors with grace and resilience. Positive psychology encourages clients to perceive challenges as opportunities for growth, fostering a mindset that transforms adversity into transformative experiences.

5. Practising self-compassion and empathy

Through self-compassion, we can acknowledge their own humanity, embracing imperfections and learning from setbacks. This self-awareness enhances empathy, enabling coaches to deeply connect with their clients’ experiences.

As coaches, we have the incredible opportunity to guide our clients towards lives filled with purpose, resilience, and joy.
