Empowering bravery: 3 Coaching questions for facing new challenges

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: August 2023

Bravery isn't reserved for people we think of as heroes, such as those who save lives or climb the highest mountain they can find. It's also needed for everyday life when we stretch ourselves to express the strength and courage we didn't know we had. It's a resource we draw on whenever we stand up to stop an injustice, deal with a crisis or take action to better our lives.

In this week's blog, we share 3 powerful coaching questions for empowering bravery and helping you feel ready to face new situations!

Bravery is often needed to meet the challenges of creating change in our lives. It can be nerve-wracking to interview for a bigger job. It can be challenging to start exercising or your own business, speak in public or end a relationship.

Stepping out of our comfort zone can be scary at times, because the unknown and unfamiliar can cause anxiety. After all, when we stay where we've always been, there's much less chance of making a mistake or feeling that we've failed. Even though change can bring real growth and vitality, it also takes courage.

The moment we choose growth over the familiar, we've gone out on a limb. We've set our bravery into motion. The truth is, change can be uncomfortable, and sometimes it may feel like we're on a rollercoaster ride with unexpected twists and turns. But it is precisely during these exhilarating moments that we find ourselves evolving, growing, and becoming more resilient.

Growth begins one step outside of our comfort zones

Each time we make a conscious choice to embrace growth over-familiarity, we awaken the bravery within us. It's like setting a powerful intention that echoes through our actions, transforming us into the hero of our own story. Amidst the excitement and uncertainty, we often encounter moments of doubt and anxiety. It's natural to wonder, "Can I do this?" or "What if I fail?" These thoughts are part of the human experience and are nothing to be afraid of. But wouldn't it be empowering to confront these fears head-on and embrace the full potential of our bravery?

This is where coaching becomes a beacon of guidance and support on our bravery journey.  A skilled life coach knows that bravery is not about eliminating fear, but rather about acknowledging it and learning to navigate through it. They help us uncover our true aspirations and strengths while providing invaluable tools to overcome obstacles and self-doubt.

Discover three powerful coaching questions that will empower you to feel brave and prepared to embrace new situations with confidence:-

1. What if you knew you couldn't fail? List five things you would do right now if you knew you couldn't fail.

2. What obstacles are holding you back from achieving your dreams?

3. Who or what could be your support as you create change or cope with new challenges in your life?

Being brave can be the door to a new beginning. It raises our adrenaline and gives us a sense of excitement to explore new skills and interests, new places, and new relationships. It's a way of saying to ourselves, 'I believe in you'. It can also be a way of setting a greater vision of ourselves.

However, the path to embracing bravery is often laden with obstacles that challenge our resolve. These obstacles can manifest as self-doubt, fear of the unknown, or even external pressures from society and our peers. Recognising and understanding these hurdles is essential for navigating through them. By identifying the specific obstacles holding us back from achieving our dreams, we gain the clarity needed to address and overcome them. It's crucial to remember that bravery does not mean the absence of fear; rather, it is the ability to confront and rise above our fears with resilience and determination.

Supporting you to stretch and grow

The support of friends, a life coach, a therapist or a support group can be invaluable during these times. They will have objectivity about your situation that you may lack at first. Surrounding ourselves with people who believe in our potential and encourage our growth can serve as a guiding light during uncertain times. Seeking coaching in particular provides people with valuable support and they can also remind you of your own strength and resiliency.  If you would like to read more about how to foster resilience, then take a read of our blog article 7 Ways to improve your resilience”.

Finding the courage to take action despite our fears is in itself a real moment of growth, no matter the outcome. It tells us we are capable of exploring and taking a chance to improve our lives. In being brave, it's natural to feel out of your comfort zone. You may even question whether you've got the strength to deal with this new stress or situation. However, this is precisely the time to tap into the many resources which can help you process and deal with the new challenge of being brave.

Being brave is not just about stepping outside our comfort zone; it's about embracing the thrill of discovery and the joy of learning.  In essence, embracing bravery is an act of self-discovery and self-improvement. It pushes the boundaries of our limitations, enabling us to envision a greater version of ourselves. It propels us towards a new beginning, where we shed old fears and inhibitions to step into the fullness of our potential.

Each act of bravery, no matter how small, compounds to create a life enriched with growth, fulfilment, and purpose. So, take that leap, ask those questions, and be ready to unlock the door to an extraordinary journey of self-transformation!
