Coaching creates space to pause in the presence of big emotions...

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: April 2023

Burnout is a slow-drip journey to mental and emotional exhaustion. A brain and nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight mode, and surviving on depleted reserves of energy. But I believe, Burnout is a gateway. An invitation to reconnect with one’s self-worth, cultivate self-compassion, and craft a meaningful life.

As a coach, I have the privilege of empowering mid-to-senior level leaders to realign with their sense of achievement without sacrificing their health and wellbeing. It's about designing a career comeback or navigating seismic identity shifts, all while cultivating emotional wellbeing and resilience as the path to bouncing forward.

Coaching allows me to express parts of myself I had hidden because it was unsafe or unwelcome. I recognise and celebrate my skills and life journey, while supporting others who are on a similar path of breaking cycles of burnout. I remain curious about the impact of psycho-emotional abuse and adverse childhood experiences on one's sense of agency, boundaries and patterns of overachievement.

Through coaching, we can integrate the wisdom of burnout into future goals and break down internal barriers that hold us back from freedom and joy. It's about running towards growth and sovereignty.

“Where do I go from here?”

My passion lies in helping clients dismantle any repetitive patterns of burnout like overachievement and people-pleasing. I believe that coaching creates space to pause, observe language and thoughts with curiosity, and lean into self-trust.  My ‘Why’ is to bring others along on this journey where we break down internal barriers and run towards freedom and joy.

My clients learn to sit with the discomfort of growth as they set boundaries, act with agency, and integrate rest as part of high performance. They find the courage to articulate their vision and redefine their version of success, leading to a return to autonomy.

When I am coaching my clients on emotional wellbeing and resilience my approach is about celebrating every milestone…their skills and life journey, while also supporting those who are on a path of breaking the cycle of burnout. It's about creating a safe space where individuals can express the parts of themselves they had hidden away, and where they can grow into their true authenticity.

My 3 top tips as a Emotional Wellbeing & Resilience Coach are:

  1. Honour your boundaries with yourself and with the external world - Boundaries are a sacred way to reclaim one's voice. The growth is in managing the internal discomfort of what happens after setting the boundary. When you are connected to your values, to your Why, it becomes easier to honour your boundaries.
  2. Come 'home' to joy - When we numb hard emotions or choose forced positivity, we also numb our capacity to feel joy (thank you, Brené Brown). Gratitude is one way to joy. Turn your attention to what brings you joy, and go to it often. Are these your hobbies? Time in nature? Learning a new skill? You don’t need to be face-to-the-floor in burnout. Joy is accessible here, now.
  3. Integrate rest as part of high performance - Whether active or passive, rest is receptive. Rest also helps tune in to the mind and body. What signals does your mind or body give to tell you something feels off and it’s time for rest?

As a Resilience Life Coach, I would say - Trust yourself. Acknowledge your capacity to do hard things. Celebrate every milestone - the little and big ones.

I trained as a coach to achieve two values-aligned outcomes:-

a) choose work that expresses natural abilities (high empath, intuition, sensitivity), and

b) craft a location-independent life. As a coach, I get to have a job on my terms, which honours my highest values – autonomy, contribution and connection!

Within burnout recovery and wellbeing coaching, we help our clients reconnect to their inner sense of control and take actions towards sustainable wellbeing. If you are passionate about burnout recovery and wellbeing, consider training to be a coach.
