By now you may be familiar with, or have heard of, the Law of Attraction which suggests that positive thinking brings positive results into your life and that ‘like attracts like’ both positively and negatively.
It is about manifesting (ie bringing into your life) what you want and making your dreams come true by getting clear about your goals, making them specific and taking action which aligns perfectly with coaching.
Some people have tried the Law of Attraction and say it doesn’t work, whereas others swear by it. If you have never tried it, think of it as being akin to a lighthouse beacon. With every thought you think and emotion you feel being transmitted to the universe where it receives it, without judgement, and sends you more of what you ordered.
Whilst everyone may approach the Law of Attraction differently the basic principles to start manifesting are the same:
1) Get clear about your goals and what you want. Doing this makes a huge difference to the outcomes you’ll receive. When you know what you want and are specific, the circuits in your brain start working to help you get it and you gain clarity which allows you to think about the actions needed to manifest the goal.
Tip: Think about when you go to a restaurant, you look at the menu and you tell the server what you want, not what you don’t want, start doing the same with your life goals. Start listening to yourself and if you notice you’re talking about what you don’t want, change it immediately and state what you do want instead.
2) Ask the universe out loud for what you want and then write it down. Saying it out loud and writing it down shows you’re committed, it makes it real, it allows you to notice how you feel, excited or fearful? The energy behind the goal makes all the difference to what you’ll receive. If you feel excited you’re focusing on what you want, feeling fearful, you may be focusing on what you don’t want. Energy is everything.
Tip: To improve your energy state, notice and name the emotion you feel. If you feel something negative don’t be afraid to acknowledge and then consciously change it, if you ignore it and hope it will go away it won’t, instead it’ll keep bringing you more of what you don’t want. Stop resisting (this is a major reason why the Law of Attraction doesn’t work for some people) and start allowing.
3) Start working towards your goal by taking regular action. Make sure to do something small or large that moves you towards it every day. If possible, include some light-hearted and fun actions as these will motivate you to keep going. All too often, adults are ‘too serious’ about their goals and that makes the goal seem boring, impossible, or demotivating.
Tip: The Interior Cingulate Cortex in your brain likes and responds to novelty. New neural pathways are developed when you introduce increased creativity and play, so think of a way to be playful with your goal on a regular basis and start enjoying the journey. I like to sing my goal to my favourite tune and dance around at the same time, it takes less than a minute and it’s fun.
4) Practise gratitude. I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but gratitude is vital when it comes to manifesting. It needs to be a genuine feeling. We all have so much to be grateful for but can forget to take time out to notice. Being grateful makes us immediately feel-good inside, as it releases dopamine and serotonin in the brain. This boosts us up the energy scale, transmits positive vibrations to the universe, and attracts more feel-good people and situations into our lives.
Tip: You can’t feel a negative emotion and gratitude at the same time. Remember this next time you feel anxious or fearful. Think of something you are genuinely grateful for and slow your breathing down, then notice how it melts away any negative feelings.
5) Be flexible and trust the process. Trusting yourself and going with the flow is important, as is belief. When you set a goal you really want, it’s important to check what level your belief is around the goal. Maybe you want it 10/10 but when you check out your belief, you find that’s less than 10. When there’s a gap between these two states your transmission to the universe will be of lack, so work on any limiting beliefs you have.
Tip: List any limiting beliefs and ask yourself “what do I want to believe instead?” Write down what you want and start focusing on bringing the new positive belief into your life. Do the same with any fears, ask yourself “what will I do if this fear does happen? How will I prepare or handle it?” Doing this changes the energy around your goal.
Decide from today to start asking the universe for what you want, pay attention to any signs of achievement or success and thank the universe for them. Start to let go of feelings of lack or resistance and introduce feelings of gratitude and ‘allowing’ daily.
