5 clues that becoming a life coach is the right career for you.

We are often told to seek within for answers, but sometimes external clues are right under our nose if you know what to look for. If you are a lifelong leaner who feels drawn to help people reach their true potential, then a career as life coach could be just want you are looking for. Here are the 5 clues:

Your book choices - You love reading self-development books. Take a look at your bookshelves, Kindle, Good Reads or think about the library books that you take out. Are there any common themes there and are there many self-development books amongst these? Who are your favourite authors of non-fiction books? An interest in psychology or in the life stories of others in the form of biography and autobiographies are clues in your interest in human nature. If you have business books it could hint at a future career as an executive leadership or business coach or if you have a lot of healthy cookbooks, you could take this interest further with a coaching niche in health and wellness.

Your media choices - You listen to podcasts in the self-development field or have audio books that are related. Take a look at your listening device and see if there are common themes in the media that you’re listening to. You might also look at which YouTube channels you’re subscribed to, which Instagram accounts you follow and even have a look at the history of the websites you’ve been searching. Take a look at your inbox too to see which newsletters you’re signed up for. Telling signs are again following coaches or leaders in personal development. You might also like watching TED talks and have an overall interest in what motivates others and why they act or behave as they do. You love to know people’s stories, the challenges they’ve faced, and how they overcame them.

Your listening skills and presence - Others in your life may be aware that you are interested in them and their motivations. They may know that you can be counted upon to be a great listener and often to ask just the right question at the right time. You’re the one they’ll call on when they are making big decisions or when they’ve suffered a setback. Listening to them comes naturally to you. Your intuitive understanding of what’s going on in the minds and hearts of others is one of your superpowers that you may not even fully recognise or acknowledge.

You love to learn - You’re open to learning about new fields and new ways of doing things. You’re willing to be creative in your approach when things don’t go as you expect. You’re interested in the world around you and have an openness to discovering things that are new to you. You have an enquiring mind and often ask thoughtful questions. This is the kind of learning we love to encourage in our internationally accredited courses.

Interpersonal skills - You see the best in others and love to see others making progress. Just as you value making progress in your own life, you love to see others having success too. You might find yourself being the champion of someone, helping them to see the very best in themselves even when they can’t see it for themselves. You’re a thoughtful person in interactions with others. This doesn’t mean that you don’t have any difficult people in your life or that you’ve never found a relationship challenging. In fact, having faced difficult situations or times in your life can give you experience to draw on and empathy when you’re helping others through challenges they’re facing in pursuit of their goals.

These five clues can be indicators that your outer interests point to coaching being a wonderful match for you as a field of study and as a career choice.

Here at The Coaching Academy, we’d love to help you to open the door on it as a possibility for your future.

We do this with our free 2-hour Introduction to Life Coaching Webinar. You learn about starting a new career as a coach on one of these calls, learn some coaching tools to help give you a flavour of the work, and see a coach session in action.

It may be the outer clue to what’s next for you that you’ve been searching for and a way of you finding your life purpose and passion by becoming a life coach.
