How coaching positively impacts young people

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: May 2019

The role of a coach is to bridge the gap between where someone is, and where they would like to be. This year has been especially challenging for young people and working with them around mental, emotional wellbeing and physical health, helping them to break down barriers that prevent them from being the person they aspire to be, has never been more important.

For many, the idea of a coach is reserved for entrepreneurs, business owners and adults looking to achieve their goals, however, coaching can also make a fantastic and lasting difference to the lives of young people. Coaching within education and youth coaching are thriving niches, with many young people experience a sense of empowerment from working with a coach. Furthermore, young people benefit greatly from learning new tools of mental, emotional and physical wellbeing with a coach.

Discover how coaching positively impacts young people:

1. Helps with self-reflection

By its nature coaching assists with self-reflection and self-aware. This is because there is no advice or input in the coaching process, rather the coach facilities change with an individual through exercises and asking the right questions. For children and teenagers, coaching encourages them to stop in their actions and learn to positively question themselves and look for solutions within.

2. Encourages problem-solving

Through asking young people what they want to do in a particular situation and reserving any advice, coaches are able to encourage problem-solving. Through asking questions like ‘how do you want to do this differently?’ or ‘how can we make this better?’ coaches allow young people to start thinking critically and from fresh perspectives. Ultimately, this assists young people in developing positive and critical decision-making skills.

3. Allows them to feel heard

The impact of being heard can be profound. For young people, their experience is most often perceived as being talked at, as opposed to listened to. As such, coaching offers a space for them to be actively listened to, allowing a new conversation that both helps them feel heard and to moves them forward to achieve their goals.

4. Builds self-confidence

Coaching sessions and coaching techniques can empower young people to feel more confident. As, they take small steps towards their goals, check in with their values and accept greater responsibility for their actions, children and teenagers build a stronger sense of worth. Furthermore, by asking young people to make decisions and come up with their own solutions, coaches work with them to build their self-confidence and feel more empowered.

Coaching arms young people with effective tools to make positive steps forward toward their goals and their future. It empowers them to make decisions, reflect on themselves, think creatively and in turn, this produces fantastic results for their sense of belonging and self-worth.
