How to make the most of your Easter long-weekend

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: April 2019

Long weekends are the perfect opportunity to recharge, refocus and be productive. The key is to be intentional with your time and to focus on balance. In doing so, you can enjoy the right mix of relaxation, and tackling the tasks you've been putting off.

Test out these 5 tips to make the most of your long weekend:

1. Try a digital detox

Research indicates that spending too much time on social media and digital devices can cause negative thought patterns, increased anxiety and decreased overall wellbeing. Plan some time to unplug and reconnect over the long weekend, even if it’s just for a few hours. By doing so you’ll enjoy lower stress, better sleep and the ability to think more creatively.

2. Spend time in nature

Although the weather isn’t always on your side, getting out into nature is a great way to centre and re-energise yourself. Whether it’s going for a walk, run, hike or wander, spending some time with fresh air in nature does wonders for your happiness and overall sense of awe.

3. Check in with yourself and your goals

Carve out some time during the weekend for guilt-free ‘you time’ and spend it focusing on your goals. You can start off by journaling or conducting a life audit, to touch base with where you are at the moment. Then, it’s time to refocus your goals, noticing all that you’ve to achieve towards them and planning your weekly routine to keep you working towards your dreams.

4. Volunteer

Volunteering isn’t just great for your community, it also has some wonderful wellbeing benefits. In fact, a 2003 study found that people who volunteer are more likely to improve their overall wellbeing and life satisfaction, as well as, benefiting from a lower risk of early death and decreased depression. So, why not use some of your extra time to give back? Spend a day or two lending a helping hand at a local charity, shelter or working with a cause you care about.

5. Connect with family and friends

It can feel difficult to prioritise family and friends when the work week is filled with deadlines, meetings, workplace pressures. Use the long weekend as an opportunity to invite people over and to spend some quality time with the people you love. Whether it’s throwing a party, hosting a dinner or planning a day out, spend a day focusing on quality time with family and friends.

When the long weekend comes around, it can be tempting to spend it binge watching TV-series. However, by choosing to make the most of it, you are able to set yourself up, for the week ahead and build a balanced routine that you can carry forward.
