Berta Maso - I fell in love with my coaching journey

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: July 2018

We recently had the opportunity to catch up with our lovely coach and business psychologist, Berta Maso, for a quick Q&A session in this week's Coach in The Spotlight column. We hope you enjoy…

What inspired you to enrol with The Coaching Academy?

When I enrolled with the Coaching Academy I was transitioning from Corporate, to being self-employed. The change was so overwhelming that I didn’t even know where to start! At that time, it all felt such a hard mountain to climb that I decided to embark myself in a discovery journey with a coach who I felt I could relate to.

My journey started by lining up my new values and life priorities (during my years in corporate I had become a mother of 2!) with my working life and seek clarity around how did I want to show up in this next chapter of my life.

I fell in love with my journey and so I thought this could be an additional service I could offer to my clients.

I am a business psychologist who has held different roles within HR, and so I felt coaching was well lined up with who I am and, above all, what I want to do more of going forward.

My coach, had trained and qualified with The Coaching Academy years back and so this is where it all started.

What was/is your profession before becoming a coach?

I was a senior HR executive who has worked for international fashion brands for 20 years.

What was the most rewarding part of your training/journey?

The Accelerator days and their facilitators. When you live the room after an Accelerator Day, you truly feel unstoppable and as if the world is your oyster!

How did you fit coach training into your busy life?

Using time management and planning skills at my best! I knew I wanted to qualify within 1 year so I set myself this target and I worked out a plan against it.

Where are you now? How are you using your coaching skills?

I am now launching my coaching business and I’m working on how to welcome this “new baby” into an already up and running Consultancy business. I am focusing on marketing and comms and above all, on changing my mindset since I now have to put the “coaching hat” on, something I had never done before.

What is your coaching niche and why did you choose it?

My niche is corporate & executive coaching. Specifically, I work with professionals who are transitioning in their careers. A big focus goes to Personal Branding, which I am becoming more and more passionate about.

In a way, I have always been helping people with their jobs. The only difference is that now I have the techniques and the tools that TCA has given me so I feel I am better equipped to help my clients succeed.

What are your top tips for:

People who are looking to become qualified as a professional coach?

Get yourself a coach! How can you walk and talk if you haven’t embarked in a coaching journey yourself?

Those currently in training with TCA?

There’s a lot of coursework that needs to be completed, so set yourself a goal (i.e. when do you want to qualify) and work out a plan that supports it. There is one important detail that you need to take into consideration. Do bear in mind that if you are doing the PPD, you will need to do 5 practical assessments and that you need to allocate a minimum of 4 weeks between assessment and assessment. The time constrains around this point does impact when you will finish your Diploma.

Coaches that are about to qualify?

Work on defining “what type of coach do you want to be known for”, and then your marketing strategy. Use social media. It’s a powerful tool!
