Coaching Has Empowered Me - By Abigale Otchere

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: December 2017

We recently caught up with The Coaching Academy Graduate, Abigale Otchere, for a Q&A session for this week 's Coach in The Spotlight. Abigale is currently hosting the Motivational Monday Podcast, where she interviews an array of inspirational experts from around the world. We hope you enjoy it...

What brought you to coaching?

I was working as an Employability Lecturer and the organisation I was working for at the time was undergoing a restructure and I started to experience a sense of restlessness, a real cry on the inside for something more, but I was unsure of what that looked like… Until I attended TCA’s Free 2-Day event and I was literally moved by Pam Lidford’s story of how coaching impacted not only herself but her family relationships.

What was the most rewarding part of your Coaching journey?

One of the best things I did was to hire myself a coach and this really become a game changer for me. It gave me the leverage I needed to begin to visualise the possibilities and untapped potential within me

Attending the Accelerator Days is one of the greatest components to learning at the TCA. I valued friendships, the interactions, the exchange of information whilst being able to share struggles or concerns… Just listening to my colleagues filled me with hope that I wasn’t alone on this journey.

What did you find most interesting to learn?

I’m absolutely intrigued around psychology and the mind… Gaining new perspectives around the DISC profiles, how different personalities perceive situations, instructions and how to coach clients around limit beliefs really excited me… Gush, the memories of my Accelerator Days just started to flood my mind. I would leave those days on FIRE and stirred up ready to implement the learning!

Which bits did you enjoy the most?

Accelerator Days, my mentoring sessions and I would also have to include the assessment calls as they equipped me with insights on how I was developing as a coach and the feedback for me was always priceless.

How did the qualification slot in with your current life?

It was tough… Half way during my studies I underwent a major surgery and was on sick leave for 3 months. However, during that time I was more determined than ever not to lag behind, so I used what seemed a negative situation to refocus on qualifying and I did just 4 marks from a Distinction!

Where are you now? How are you using your coaching skills?

Fast forward to today, and I am the host of Motivational Monday Podcast where I interview an array of inspirational experts from around the world - from coaches, fitness gurus, authors, creatives, doctors… (some of my guests have been graduates from TCA!). The message is clear to inspire, empower & motivate people by equipping them with the tools necessary to win the inner game of life! I absolutely love the work that I do reaching people all over the world and seeing traffic figures of 15,000 encourages me to keep on…

In addition, I coach clients one to one or one to many, and in my teaching I always underpin my sessions with coaching... My last set of learners I taught and coached around limiting beliefs. At the end of the course, they had to set an exam, which many were concerned about and to my delight it was a 100% pass rate... I was blown away with every single person passed.

What is your coaching niche and why did you choose it?

At present, it’s Career & Confidence Coaching as it depicts my own personal journey.

What is the best thing that could happen to your coaching business in the next 2 years?

To be speaking globally including schools, colleges and universities, travelling and running workshops including television.

What is your favorite coaching question?

  • What would you do start today if you knew you could not fail?
  • What else is missing?

What do you enjoy most about being a coach?

The question 'how has this session been helpful to you?' Listening to their feedback and seeing an individual grow wings (confidence).

What are your top tips for:

  • People who are looking at coaching: Best investment you could ever make – it will pay off in dividends as long as you do the work. Go for it… It will add enormous value to you not only professionally but also personally.
  • Those coaches currently in training: Team up with others, don’t go it alone… You’re the sub-total of the people you surround yourself with so surround yourself with achievers.
  • Coaches that are about to qualify: Well done! Keep going just one more PUSH!
  • People that are in a similar situation to yourself: Seek to identify people who have achieved what it is you desire and model what it is they do within that specific area – success leaves clues!
