My Coaching Journey - Siany Evans

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: August 2017

My journey started about a year ago when I stumbled across a free 2-Day sample about coaching on Facebook. I signed up and it was at that taster session that I knew it-was-for-me.

What attracted me to be wanting to become a coach was to help people achieve their goals - similar to what I do in my current job role as a teacher, however I wanted to deepen my skills in a different environment. At first, I didn't know exactly how I would utilise my qualification but I had a few ideas up my sleeve, and thought I would cross that bridge nearer the time, I just needed to get started.

Once I received my Diploma course box (it was exciting and overwhelming at the same time), I got stuck right in. I organised my work into the relevant areas, completed the necessary module activity and booked on to my first Accelerator Day. I still remember my first Accelerator Day (and each one thereafter) -  I always left the room buzzing and inspired to complete the next task.

There were times where I felt nervous, for example, having to do my practical assessments, however through all the support from the Academy I felt I had learnt successful strategies to overcome my fears. It is easy for me to say that my experience with the Coaching Academy has been a really good one. Throughout my experience the Academy has remained professional, supportive and fun.

So how as coaching benefited me? This course has definitely made a positive impact on me and as a result, it has led me to get a promotion in my work place (which I am very proud and excited about). I am a teacher and now through coaching I will be improving the lives of disadvantaged students and pupil outcome in the Pupil Referral Unit, by coaching staff in multiple academies and working closely with the chief executive and headteachers.

More importantly, through this course I have gained an exposure to a wider insight about myself and the people around me, as well as professional development. I now understand how to work and adapt to people with different personality types (and this understanding has even improved some of my personal relationships!)

If you are thinking of enrolling with The Coaching Academy, get all your questions answered at the Free 2-Day event because this is where all my enquiries were addressed and it was plain sailing from there. Besides this, the tester day is an excellent way to get a feel what coaching is (with no strings attached). There, I met professional coaches, who run successful businesses, sharing their expertise through a well-thought programme.

Lastly, I am looking forward to exploring my new job role as a middle leader, 'Teacher and Performance Coach’ and my future goal is to strengthen my role as an Educational Coach. Furthermore, I would like to thank The Coaching Academy for producing such a professional and engaging course. I am proud to have completed my qualification with a Distinction and look forward to the journey ahead.

My top tips would be:

1. Don't over think it. Keeping it simple is key.

2. Use the support which is offered to you from The Coaching Academy, such as your peers, online group support and mentors.

3. Go to your coaching group meet-ups. This will keep the ball rolling (and what a wonderful way to continue to meet like-minded people).

4. Organise your work into folders: coaching clients, practical assessment, module LRS, Accelerator Days, Webinar and Mentoring etc.

5. Get comfortable feeling uncomfortable and – just do it!
