5 Ways Coaching Motivates Employees

The Coaching Academy Blog

Posted: July 2015

Adopting a coaching culture within the workplace recognises the value of employees and encourages personal learning, growth and responsibility. Developing these skills can create more harmonious relationships, increased trust and stronger loyalty between employees and employer.

Corporate coaching has started to become an integral part of staff development. Adopting a coaching culture within the workplace recognises the value of employees and encourages personal learning, growth and responsibility.  Developing these skills can create more harmonious relationships, increased trust and stronger loyalty between employees and employer.

As a result of investing in employees, retention levels are increased, productivity is improved and staff commitment is created, all of which provide a solid platform for staff to reach their highest potential.

5 ways to encourage employee motivation:

Objective space to discuss challenges
Coaching provides employees with a safe space to objectively discuss their challenges without feeling judged or criticised. Having an impartial person to discuss challenges with encourages an honest approach to tackling any underlying issues and potential road blocks to their progress. Reflective questioning can also shed light on a situation and provide a different perspective which can move an employee from a space of feeling stagnant into a space of taking action to move forwards.

Working towards a goal
Employees can benefit from working with a coach to set short-term goals which are specifically related to their jobs. Creating a plan that is customised to organisational objectives as well as supporting an employee’s needs for his or her particular role is a great way to enhance job motivation, build confidence and encourage employees to stretch beyond their existing skill sets, empowering them to learn more.

Transforms mental state
Working with a coach allows employees to move beyond any existing mental limitations and focus on solutions instead. By taking small steps to reach goals whilst being supported in the process, a coach can assist an employee to shift their focus to their strengths and successes rather than indulging in self-criticism. Focusing on the positives allows an employee to transform their mind-set to one that is complementary to their professional development and creates a ‘can do’ attitude.

Supports individuality
Methods of coaching used are unique to each employee. A coach recognises that everyone is motivated in different ways, by different things and at different times. By working in a way that is tailored to each individual’s challenges, the navigation towards completion of the goal is a far smoother process. Working to specific needs of employees enables them to build the relevant skill sets to meet challenges head on, so they can reach their highest potential.

Collectively working towards common goal
By encouraging employees to work towards achieving their specific professional goals, an organisation is not only increasing levels of staff satisfaction but also steering employees in a direction that supports the attainment of its organisational objectives. Adopting this approach helps gain buy-in from employees and gives them an understanding of why they are working towards organisational objectives and how they can benefit personally.

Providing coaching services to employees is a pivotal way to activate the potential of your workforce, increase your return on investment as well as enhance staff motivation levels.

“Whether it’s complacency in high performing individuals, brand new or well established teams, employees undergoing performance management, or organisations undergoing change – coaching works.  The impact it has on motivation – and as a direct result; performance, retention, leadership and business growth – is profoundly significant”
